Design

With a stainless steel screen with intricate drawings, the building is completely covered with an outer skin composed of four “butterfly” aluminum elements of different scales and intricate drawings that evoke the complexity of the eastern moucharabieh while serving as sun protection.

The cladding system is a reference to the traditional Islamic “mashrabiya”, or artistic display used to shade or divide rooms. The design of the system involved the use of a single geometric motif on several scales, superimposed on different densities along the facade.

From a distance, the screen appears as a uniform density, but the complexity of the layers

and the scale of the screens is evident from a closer point of view, which gives the building multiple texture experiences.

The space is mainly used as an office building, with office floors but adding more as the icing, the top floor has a private luxury residence, restaurant, and overlooking deck to enjoy the 360-degree aerial views of the city.
Three floors of the tower are dedicated to parking spaces that can accommodate enough space for more than 870 cars.

The Tower

The Burj Doha Tower rightly defines the excellent use of art and technology, adding a landmark to the city. This is the 6th longest building in Qatar built at an excellent location- the West Bay.

Overlooking the Persian Gulf, Burj Doha tower is right beside the shore that offers an incredible vista, adorning the dazzling skyline.

West Bay has been home to a number of developing projects to make Doha a developed city in the future. This locality in Qatar is quite famous among the ex-pats for the luxury hotels, cafes, malls, and more, providing a spot to hang out and enjoy the holiday. The locality has played an essential part in making the tower a landmark for many. If there are options to indulge in luxury and leisure, the Burj tower has offered quality spacing for commercial and general public use.

Structure

Shadow

Behind the shadow, layer is a typical curtain wall system created by a slightly reflective glass that completes the sunscreen. If necessary, it has roller blinds. For maintenance, access from the 2m wide walkways located between the two layers, the metal, and the glass. These gateways also act in the ventilation of the tower by producing a “chimney effect” between the two layers. User-operable solar screens are also available behind the glazed curtain wall. It is estimated that the general facade system reduces cooling loads by 20%. At night, an integrated lighting system improves the delicate display with programmable light shows

Awards and Recognition

The Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat named it the best tall building in the Middle East and North Africa in 2012, citing the way the cylindrical building uses "ancient Islamic patterns" in its design.

At the fifth annual Middle East Architect Awards 2012, the tower received the "Overall Project of the Year" award. On this occasion, Jean Nouvel was presented with a specially-made scale model of the tower.

Additional Information

Design

The Tower’s perimeter structure is an integral part of the design expression—exposed tubular structural façade, clad in part with aluminum composite panels. High performance glass and internal sun shading devices ensure that cooling costs are reduced, and architectural detailing promises an airtight building, reducing air leakage to a minimum. In addition, rainwater is recycled and used for irrigation purposes. Fire safety measures include dedicated fire lifts and extra stairs. The use of a steel perimeter structure, rather than the more usual concrete structure predominantly utilized in the region, makes for much more slender structural members, maximizing the uninterrupted panoramic views across the city and beyond.

The Tower

Tornado Tower is the perfect example of magnificent imagination and exceptional development. As one of the most noteworthy and striking landmarks of Doha, the Tower has been recognized by the Council of Tall Building and Urban Habitat’s CTBUH Awards as the Best Tall Building Middle East & Africa 2009 Winner. Tornado Tower provides Doha’s city skyline with a contemporary outlook, from its key location in the West Bay area. Thanks to its inimitable design, the instantly recognizable tower lends a powerful setting to the location.
